The Apennines are a mountain range in central Italy. The Tiber River, which flows through the city of Rome, originated in these mountains, and provided many benefits for the ancient Romans, who lived to the west of the mountains. The Romans would also mine ores from the Apennines. The Apennines are very old compared to the Alps in the north. Therefore, the summits of the Apennines are shorter and far less jagged.
